Jade nodded and sighed. “Sorry, it’s just…Hizuka is pretty much my best friend from my clan, and for that, my only true friend in the clan. Now she is in danger and it is my fault.  I have to save her.”

“Jade you will save her, don’t worry about that.”  Crimson smiled and looked up from the detector unit.  “I have sparred with you twice, and you are pretty good.”  Jade nodded but sighed sadly.  “Jade you may have lost in the past to her, but you won’t this time, you have back up, every time she’s beaten you, she’s had a gang of henchmen or a trap for you.”  Crimson smiled at Jade as she started to show her usual confidence. Crimson rapidly packed away the equipment and stashed it safely then the three heroines took to the air flying as fast as they could go, Jade was the slowest flyer of the three but flicked some power in her body and grew her energy wings so she could keep up more easily.  They made pretty good time and landed together on the roof.

Jade took the offered staff of domination and listened as White Owl explained some details about the staff.  Jade then explained her plan of action, while basic, it felt like the best way to proceed-Jade planned to go in like she had in the past as, Ruby would expect, becoming a distraction while her allies snuck in and got in position.

Jade dropped to the floor, the staff over her shoulder on a strap.  She simply poleaxed the first thug she saw slamming him against, Ruby’s black Mercedes with enough force to actually damage the car. As she moved on Crimson and White Owl followed her at a discreet distance.  White Owl listening in horrified fascination to Crimson about how Jade and Ruby were sisters but Ruby had been involved in the death of their parents in some way.

White Owl sighed, concerned about Jade’s temper and the burden Jade carried, having to bring her own sister to justice would be hard on the young ninja. As Crimson and White Owl watched Jade continued her one woman army routine, knocking the hired goons around with ease until she faced Ruby and her body guard of Spider Clan Ninjas.

White Owl tensed up recognising the outfit from a fight she had a week ago on the roof of the STAR labs building on the Sylvania estate.  Jade’s plan seemed to be working though, Ruby’s men surrounded her and outnumbered Jade had no choice but to stand still with her hands raised in surrender

“You came alone AND with MY staff! Good girl little sister, but stupid!”  Ruby motioned to some of   her clan ninja’s who had not gotten into the fight with Jade.  Pass them the staff, no tricks!”  Jade nodded and threw the staff to one then stood waiting to see what Ruby would try next.

“Ok Jade you did what you were asked to do, Hizuka is over there.”  Ruby pointed to a pit under a large vat of molten steel.  Hizuka was struggling violently, roped to a chair at the waist, legs and wrists, gagged and blindfolded.  “Now Jade, you want her free; there is a price to pay.”

Jade furrowed her brow as she considered this and guessed what was coming, she had planned for a betrayal by Ruby as soon as she got the staff.  “What cost? I brought you the damn stick!”  Jade let some of her anger fuel her words, playing along with her evil sister for now

“You are the price Jade.  Either you renounce the path of light and join me or you continue to act like you are some perfect little girl, loyal to a failing clan and I kill you.”  She motioned to a pile of ropes nearby.  “Pick those up if you want to live. Otherwise this time, I will just shoot you in the head.”

Jade stood in place, anger radiating from her in waves.  She looked at the madly struggling Hizuka and then turned to her evil sister.  Then she smiled, tilting her head as Ruby looked on confused by the shift in Jade's demeanour.

“You really are dim witted Ruby!  If you kill Hizuka you lose your leverage, and you know that I would kill you if you tried to end her life; even if I died in the attempt, if you  harm Hizuka and there will be no place you can run to hide from me, ever.”

Ruby snorted and aimed her pistol at Jade but inwardly she was reeling, she was certain Jade would have folded at the threat to Hizuka, Ruby stepped forward and raised her other arm. The nozzles on her gauntlet shifted and a wide net of webbing shot out with sufficient force to pin Jade to a crate, as the petite ninja struggled Ruby walked over towards the control panel for the molten metal molds.

“Well you finally grew some balls huh? I want the spear back too but that can wait for when you finally turn to evil.”  Ruby tapped a couple of buttons and moved the molten metal hopper closer to Hizuka’s position. As Jade lunged forward suddenly, free of the web Ruby span round and slammed the staff into Jade’s stomach, Jade dropped to the floor winded and struggled to rise, she felt something scratch her neck and her remaining strength ebbed away along with her powers.  She yelped as she was dragged to her feet by one of Ruby’s thugs and felt her wrists being bound together.

Ruby stepped forwards smirking and slapped Jade across the face.  “You and that bitch in the red costume have cost me too much money, and too much time in apologies to the Yakuza and the Triads! I am going to enjoy seeing you shipped back to Japan as a failure.”

As Ruby turned she felt a sudden backhand blow to the right of her face and was knocked flying, she rolled to her feet and turned to face the attacked and frowned.  Crimson stood looking at her; the taller Asgardian powered heroine’s face was a mask of sheer rage

“Remember me you witch?”  Crimson pulled one of her pistols and put a bullet of pure energy into the floor at Ruby’s feet.  “I am healed and you have tried to hurt Jade for the last time!”

Ruby snorted and stepped forwards aiming her pistol then froze, hovering in the air now was a third heroine, she knew who White Owl was by reputation and her face paled.  She backed up, moving towards the controls for the metal hopper.  “So Jade you are such a coward, you brought back up even though you knew what the penalty was for disobeying my instructions?”

Jade shook her head as the drug in her system started to fade compared to her avatar healing.  And looked up.  “Like you would play fair Ruby!  You use a gang and thugs to hide and threaten a girl who has no powers!”  As Jade stood up she snapped the ropes around her wrists and kicked backwards into he crotch of the thug behind her, her eyes were a solid luminous green now, her powers at peak level, due to her emotional state.

“YOU ARE THE COWARD! NOT ME, NOT MY CLAN!  YOU ARE A TRAITOROUS, SPOILED LITTLE BITCH AND THIS ENDS TONIGHT!”  Jade flew upwards, her energy wings growing from her back and her energy bow appearing in her hands, she quickly shot four of Ruby’s thugs sending them flying backwards with a crash over some tables then she dived straight for Hizuka.

Ruby shook her head, her plan unravelling she thumped the controls and molten metal started to tip into the molding pit where Hizuka was bound, Jade cursed under her breath and dived down, and tried to move the chair but it was chained down.  Her arms strained as she poured her powers into them trying to move the chair but it was too secure.  Jade quickly threw up her shield and pushed the molten steel away from Hizuka, but she felt the drain, she would not be able to fight this much heat and mass for long.

Crimson reacted at once, “Owl! Go help Jade, Me and her sister Ruby have unfinished business!”  White Owl nodded and flew into the air, diving towards the pit and she started to work on freeing Hizuka from the ropes. Jade groaning as she tried to hold back nearly a ton of molten steel with just her powers.

Crimson turned to face Ruby as she aimed the staff at Crimson’s chest, a cruel, twisted smile on her face.  Ruby flicked her power into the staff and then looked on in puzzlement, nothing was happening.  Crimson pulled the staff from her hands, span it around and sent Ruby flying across the chamber to slam against a stack of scrap metal.

“We removed the lodestone from the staff, you cannot put power through it anymore witch!”  Crimson swung a perfect punch at her rival as she charged her, Ruby brought her hand up, the pistol shakily aiming for Crimson, but Crimson snatched the gun and threw it away.  “Come on Miss Big power! Fight!”

Ruby snarled with rage and swung a punch back but her hand was caught by Crimson and she screeched in pain as she was thrown against a wall. Crimson smiled seeing the various thugs run from the warehouse in panic; Ruby was unconscious for now so Crimson handcuffed her to a railing then ran over to the molding pits.  She turned the controls for the hopper and it receded back, pouring no more metal into the hopper, Crimson looked down, her heart hammering in her chest as she saw her friends below,

White owl grunted as she snapped the last of the ropes and turned to Jade, the smaller girl was covered in sweat and starting to show signs of exhaustion from using so much power for so long.   “Jade! I have her let’s go!”  White Owl took to the air and gently laid the exhausted Hizuka on the floor, a moment later Jade’s shield dropped and Jade, covered in sweat and dirt from the tank, appeared at the top of the tank. Wearily landing next to Hizuka, Jade groaned with the aftershock of using so much power at once.

“I...I’m ok.” Jade smiled as Crimson reached them, Jade removing Hizuka’s blindfold, the smaller Japanese girls eyes blinked in surprise, the blindfold had been thick, and although she had been aware of the heat, she had not seen or heard anything until now. “J…Jade….What?”

Jade kissed Hizuka on the cheek then looked at her friends and allies.  “I think I have my full power now, that was just a big drain, but I am recovering already.  Even as she spoke, Jade’s eyes were glowing once more and her body seemed to recover from the strain.  “I…I…Owe you both so much…”  She turned towards Crimson and her eyes went wide and Jade raised both her hands, raising her shield, a dull cracking noise joined the sparking effects as bullets slammed against her shield.  Jade stood up and moved forwards, her eyes glowing with power, as she moved towards her sister.

Crimson turned in surprise, her gaze briefly admiring the young Hizuka before concentrating on what Jade was doing.  Ruby had freed herself from the cuffs and found her gun, but now seem to be looking for a fresh magazine of ammo.  White Owl grunted and her bolas whipped by once again disarming the evil ninja and all 3 heroines squared off against the crazed, evil woman.

Crimson looked up at those words, she had heard everything Jade had said up till now and her body went cold at Jade’s tone, the Jade Eagle had spoken in a very cold, flat tone. White Owl smiled again and listened to the exhausted thanks from Jade and Hizuka but as soon as Crimson took off she turned to face the madly struggling Ruby.  “You stupid bitch! “I have heard all about you, Ruby, I know what you have done to Jade! I hope you enjoy your time in the state prison!”  White Owl picked up the struggling crook and carried her outside to the awaiting police cars that were just arriving.  She was surprised to see a federal van and several F.B.I officers outside securing the area, a tall man in body armour walked over towards her an assault rifle slung over one arm his powerful build stretched his tunic under the armour and he nodded at White owl producing an ID folder. “Commander Hawkson, FBI Organised Crime unit. I will take her off your hands, you damn super heroes ruined a long time sting op we had running on Ruby.” White Owl frowned at that but his ID looked genuine as was all the gear deployed.  She handed Ruby over and watched as the villainess was placed in a secure prison truck under armed guard, along with several members of the gang.

“She nearly killed someone tonight! You were not going to step in?” White Owl tried to contain her anger at the man’s attitude as he smiled back at her.

“Actually we were moving in but your group beat us too it. Please don’t misunderstand, I am grateful she’s contained, I just am…uncomfortable with persons like you, with powers normal people cannot do is all.”  With that he flipped a salute of sorts and his team left,

“Jade told me you would not be jealous, I hope so, there is some stuff you need to know, and I don’t know how much she has told you.”

But I will see you on Friday night for that meal, once I have been on patrol – Jade, stay in bed and rest, you really pushed it today, we need to check you over soon, just see how powerful you are now.”

Jade panted as she ran along the edge of a building, the security guards chasing her, she grinned and jumped from one building to the next, as she landed, she faltered slightly at the size of the jump she had made, but decided to worry about it later and just run.  She had easily found the Jade statuette she had been sent to recover for her clans’ shrine, but had tripped an alarm on the way out, somehow though she had beaten her way through 6 guards with little effort.

Jade flipped herself into the air and onto to the fire escape then quickly slid down the ladder. 

“Too easy!  Why am I so on form?” her mind raced as she continued to run to where she had hidden her car.

Jade jumped into the Jaguar and gunned the V8 sports car into life; she drove off at a regular speed, slipping her gloves off and a T-shirt over her body glove as she drove.  She grinned at her face in the rear view. "That was a milk run today, but was good to be back in the field.”

2 days later….

Jade sat cross legged in the shrine mediating after the ceremony had been performed to retrieve the final objects that had been stolen from the Eagle clan 20 years before.  She tried to clear her head as she kept having dreams about a soaring jade coloured eagle in a city somewhere, suddenly she looked around convinced she had heard a voice.

It was low and almost a whisper; “Jade, it is time to awaken your inner spirit, time to become one…”

Jade stood up; “Who is here? Show yourself!” her brown hair was standing up like a static charge was around her, her skin tingled and it was not from a draft or another stimuli.  She span around again, no sign of anyone.  Jade turned and ran for the doors only to suddenly be frozen to the spot.  She struggled but was suddenly picked up and turned to face the shrine by an unseen but friendly feeling energy.

Knowledge filled her, of the glories of the other Avatars who had gone before her.  She felt her strength grow and her body in general just felt really strong and healthy, better then she had ever been.  Jade laughed and relaxed as a vision filled her mind.

“Jade you were chosen at birth to be the next avatar of the clan Eagle; your destiny is to stop your sister before she finds the Staff of Domination.  If Ruby masters the staff; she will have the power to rule the world.  Henceforth you are the Avatar champion of the Eagles.”

Jade felt the power release her and she wandered outside, Sensei Fang smiled at her and sat her down on the grass, he talked to her for some time, but Jade was not sure she was taking it in.  At last he smiled and asked her to try her powers.  Jade concentrated and looked inwards, trying to figure out what she could now do. She had another brief sense of how to fly, and raising her arms above her head, she flew into the air.  She smiled as she flew around the camp and then landed.

She then looked at the archery targets, picked up one of the clans’ collapsible bows and pulled it into shape.  The moment she took hold of the bow string, a bright green arrow appeared in the bow, Jade let go of the string in surprise and the arrow flew but fell short of the target, she spent some time practicing it and then retired to her cabin to meditate and adapt to what had happened to her.

The following day while eating breakfast; she talked to Hizuka a little nervous that maybe Hizuka was jealous but Hizuka just grinned and asked what she could do.

“Well I can fly, create arrows from energy and can form a ball of energy around myself as a shield.  According to sensei I will heal quickly and will be stronger and harder to hurt. But I am still human, I can be killed like anyone else, other than that, I can make a blast wave to knock down opponents, but I can only use my Avatar powers when I am not using me Psychic ones, I cannot use them both at once”.

Jade shrugged, and read through the document she had brought from the planning centre.  She stood up and started to load her suitcase with clothes and other gear.  “This should be interesting if awkward, I have to go to Queen City, that’s where Ruby is right now, that city is full of super heroes and super villains. Given how I operate, I don’t think either group is going to think much of me”.

Jade hugged Hizuka close and sighed. “Going to miss you, I could be there a while”.  Hizuka nodded for a second it looked like she was going to say something but then just helped Jade load her gear for the trip.

Two weeks later…

Jade grumpily crouched on a wet roof overlooking the dockside warehouse she had been staking it out for a full week in between trying to master her powers and find a suitable job for her cover.  Sitting around in the rain was not her idea of fun, however she was determined not to let her sister get away with the stolen staff and use it to harm others.

Jade sighed and shook her head, telling herself to get her head straight and focus, this was going to be the first time she ever took on her sister, who was older, stronger and had more time to get used to having spirit powers.  Jade straightened up as she saw a black Mercedes 500CLpull up in a squeal of tyres as it slid across the grimy concrete.  Jade tensed as she saw her sister get out and walk into the warehouse.

Jade quickly moved across to the skylight and looked in, Ruby was below examining a 6 foot long engraved staff, turning it over in her hands.  Ruby suddenly span it in her hands and pointed it at an old oil drum there was a flash of blood red light and the oil drum melted into a pool of liquid metal.

Ruby was gloating below her “Yes this will do, with this I can kill any superhero that tries to stop me, enter any bank vault and clear it and the Spider clan will rule Queen City! WE shall rule!”

Jade flipped through the skylight and dropped gently to the floor, using her flight power at the last second to arrest her fall, she dropped behind a large pile of rotting car tires and waited, looking for an opening.  All the time Ruby was threatening her own thugs and blasting things at random each hit providing a different effect as Ruby seemed to be controlling the staff.

Jade waited till a few of the thugs had left with Ruby who had stored the staff in an old safe.  Jade quickly moved across the room, and knocked the two remaining guard’s heads together with a crunch!  They fell to the floor unconscious but alive, Jade smirked and turned her attention to the safe.  “Hmm an old one this, should be child’s play…”

“Hello Jade, long time, no see!” Jade whirled around to see Ruby looking at her, her sister’s face twisted with cruelty and her eyes lit up a deep red colour, Jade tensed up and summoned her own spirit power, her eyes glowing green. 

“Nice so the old fart finally got you trained enough to be an avatar eh?” Ruby snorted and threw a couple of pairs of handcuffs at Jade.  “Saw you drop down from the roof, now put those on now ankles first, then wrist behind your back, around that pole behind you.”

Jade shook her head “Why sis? Please come back to the path of light, I can save you! I don’t want to fight you, you’re my sister!”  Jade stared at Ruby her eyes wet with emotion. She took one step forward. “Please sis, stop hurting people!”

“Still sanctimonious I see little girl! Get her!” Ruby pointed at Jade and some more thugs ran straight at Jade, she ducked under a clumsily swung club and kicked the guy flying across the room, and turned to face the next one, he grabbed her wrist and span behind her back, trying to restrain her, Jade flipped him clean over her shoulder into the next thug, both men fell to the floor in a heap of tangled limbs.  Jade turned to see Ruby had fled during the fight with the staff. Jade cursed and flew out of the door way, she soon spotted Ruby’s care tearing along the street and followed it.

“What is she doing?” Jade watched as Ruby pointed the staff at the doors of a high class jewellery store, the staff obliterated the door in a sheet of red flame and her remaining men ran into the building. Jade dropped down and snuck in behind them….

Elsewhere in Queen City…

Crimson was flying over the city when her phone buzzed she tapped the receiver “Crimson? There is something going on in Goldstein’s Jewellers, the alarm has gone off, and the camera feed we have before they failed, it looks like a new villain is in town and she’s trashing the place,  looks too big for us to handle.”

“On my way, send some patrol units to arrest the bad guys once I’m done with them”. Crimson smiled as she flew towards the city centre, tonight had been so quiet, and now a new villain in town?

Back at Goldstein’s…

Jade back flipped over the counter and brought up her shield as Ruby fired blast after blast of energy at her, Jade grimaced, she knew she could not keep the shield up for ever, and the feedback was making it hard to focus.  Jade grunted and channelled more power into the shield, but knew her powers were not going to last.

Jade looked up at her sister gloating and taunting her from across the room, she stopped the attacks contemptuously and sneered as she walked over to Jade.  “Pitiful! Yu are not ready to fight me, you will never be able to beat me Jade! YOU ARE WEAK!”  She reached down to grab Jade but Jade slammed her fist into the floor sending a blast of energy into her sister and knocking her backwards across the room and off her feet.

“I am not WEAK! You’re the one who turned to the path of darkness! You are a criminal who must repent! ” Jade stood up unsteadily and grabbed the staff away from Ruby and threw it behind her.  “Ruby please stop this! I don’t want to hurt my sister!”  Jade leaned against the counter; most of the shop was in ruins from the fight

When Crimson arrived she took in the door blown to matchsticks and the 3 thugs lying unconscious by the door.  She cocked her head to one side; these thugs were all wearing black with a read spider web design on their armour.  She crept forward as she heard a huge bang from inside the store.  Crimson sae a young girl dressed in green fly backwards into the wall, grunt with the force of the impact; although dazed Jade made the effort to stand, it was plain to see though the smaller girl was exhausted.

“Jade?” Ruby looked at her sister, Jade was holding her head and shaking it slowly, she watched Jade turn towards her then flicked her wrist at Jade; Jade felt a sharp nick in her leg and reached down pulling out a needle.  Jade suddenly slumped to the floor as her body tingled and lost all its strength. 

“What the?” Jade tried to push herself up onto her feet but her arms barely responded to her frantic mind.  She felt all the various bumps and scrapes she had picked up in the fight aching as her body went to sleep, even though her mind was awake.

Ruby snorted and adjusted something on her gauntlet, and sprayed Jade in the face, Jade recoiled as her mouth was sealed by some sticky silken fluid that set rapidly gluing her mouth shut.  Jade started to sit up groggily, her body rejecting the soporific drug but it was too late. Ruby took hold of her with one hand and started spraying the fluid on Jades legs, Now Jade could not move her legs apart, they were stuck fast.

Quickly Ruby cocooned her sister in the artificial spider webbing then dumped a bag next to her brimming with uncut jewels from the safe.  She smirked at the frantically struggling Jade and looked around for the staff, but could not see it in the wreckage of the shop.

“Gotta go boss the alarm…”  Ruby nodded to her last conscious henchman and ran out of the shop; she stopped briefly for one last taunt, angry that she had lost such a powerful weapon.   

“Jade, your career as a hero is gone before it gets going, when the cops find you with that bag you will go to jail for a long time, no one will believe you tried to stop me, They will think you were stopped by one of the local do gooders!”  Ruby turned and marched out of the wrecked shop and drove off. 

Jade wriggled and struggled but she was helpless, she started to shake, her mind racing, “I failed! I failed the clan and now I am going to prison!”  She looked up as she heard movement, and felt tears well up.  The figure walked over to her and kneeled next to her, it was a beautiful red head in a revealing black and red costume. Crimson pulled the sticky gunk from Jades face.

“I am the Crimson Valkyrie, you can call me Crimson for short, I heard what she said as she left, don’t worry you won’t be arrested.  Crimson picked up the scared, exhausted jade and carried her outside.  “Now then, anything I need to know?”  Crimsons voice was interrogative but warm she was methodically pulling the webbing apart with the dagger she had pulled out of Jade's boot top.

Jade nodded and told her about the staff and why she was there, the history and background of the situation, Jade also admitted that she was trained to use criminal tactics against criminals, but never used them for her own profit.  Crimson listened sympathetically to Jade, and then quickly found the staff under the rubble.  She looked it over curious.  “If this thing is as powerful as you say, I best get it taken somewhere safe where it can be examined; I have a friend White Owl who can help with that.”

Crimson cuffed the thugs laid out and left them to be arrested; and then picked Jade up in her arms. “Hang on to me and tell me where you live, I will get you home and check you for injuries; it’s ok you can trust me, I do believe you were not robbing the place.”

Jade whispered her address and Crimson took off holding jades exhausted body gently, they soon arrived at Jades apartment and she carried Jade in quickly, she laid Jade down on her bed and checked her for injuries, she saw most were healing well, it was all superficial, and exhaustion.  Crimson smiled at Jades tired face.  “Don’t worry Jade,  as you get used to your powers both you and your powers will get stronger, it just takes time.”

Jade winced as she sat up; she was still pretty shaken up but looked at Crimson in awe as she sat next to her on the bed. “Crimson t...thank you for this...I am not used to failing…”

Crimson hugged her close “It’s ok to fail Jade, it happens to the best of us, but you stopped the robbery and the cops have several of those thugs in custody by now, Besides, Ruby no longer has the staff.  Now sleep, I will stay with you till you fall asleep.”
